What are the safety ratings of the Jeep Patriot?
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) tests vehicles based on two criteria: crashworthiness and crash avoidance and mitigation.
Crashworthiness is how well a vehicle protects its occupants during a crash. Crash avoidance and mitigation tests technology that can prevent a crash or lessen the severity if a crash occurs.
The following video shows a test on a 2016 Jeep Patriot for side crashes.
Safety ratings are determined after one of these test crashes is initiated. Several factors are studied:
- Measurements from the dummies post-impact
- Survival space
- Airbag effectiveness
- Seat belt effectiveness
The following table shows the results of a test on the 2012 Jeep Patriot in relation to what is called “driver-side small overlap front,” one of six types of tests.
2012 Jeep Patriot Safety Ratings
Test Type | Rating |
---|---|
Small overlap front: driver-side Overall evaluation | Poor |
Small overlap front: driver-side Structure and safety cage | Poor |
Small overlap front: driver-side driver injury head/neck | Good |
Small overlap front: driver-side driver injury measures chest | Good |
Small overlap front: driver-side driver injury measures hip/thigh | Acceptable |
Small overlap front: driver-side driver injury measures lower leg/foot | Poor |
Driver restraints and dummy kinematics | Poor |
When the 2012 model was tested, the front of the vehicle did not perform very well. According to IIHS, the dummy’s head barely contacted the front air bag and was vulnerable to contact with the forward side structure.
Furthermore, the seat belt allowed the dummy’s head and torso to move farther far more than it should have, and the driver’s seat tipped forward, increasing the likelihood of impact to the skull.
The side air bag did not deploy at all, further allowing the skull to be vulnerable to the side structure as well.
The next table shows the results of a moderate overlap frontal test on a 2008 model. This type of test has a vehicle move at 40 mph toward a two-foot barrier made of aluminum honeycomb.
2008 Jeep Patriot Crash Test Ratings
Test Type | Rating |
---|---|
Moderate overlap front overall evaluation | Good |
Moderate overlap front structure and safety cage | Good |
Moderate overlap front driver injury measures: Head/neck | Acceptable |
Moderate overlap front driver injury measures: chest | Good |
Moderate overlap front driver injury measures: Leg/foot, left | Good |
Moderate overlap front driver injury measures: leg/foot,right | Good |
Good |
Here is a video of the test.
The following video shows a moderate overlap frontal test from above.
As you can see from the table, except for potential damage to the head and neck, this test went much better.
This next table shows the results of a side test on a 2008 model. A side crash test is done by smashing a 3,300-pound SUV-like barrier against the driver’s side at 31 mph. Like the other tests, dummies are placed in the tested vehicle beforehand.
Jeep Patriot Side Test Safety Rating
Test Type | Rating |
---|---|
Side - Overall evaluation | Good |
Side - Structure and safety cage | Good |
Side - Driver injury measures: head/neck | Good |
Side - Driver injury measures: torso | Acceptable |
Side - Driver injury measures: pelvis/leg | Good |
Side - Driver head protection | Good |
Side - Rear passenger injury measures: head/neck | Good |
Side - rear passenger injury measures: torso | Acceptable |
Side - rear passenger injury measures: pelvis/leg | Good |
Side - rear passenger head protection | Good |
Here is a video of the crash test.
This final table shows the results from tests on multiple sections of a 2009 model.
Additional Jeep Patriot Safety Test Ratings
Test Type | Rating |
---|---|
Roof Strength | Good |
Head restraints & seats | Good |
Headlights | Poor |
Child seat anchors | Acceptable |
The test for roof strength went well. These tests are done to test vehicles’ durability during a rollover collision. This test is completed by pushing an angled metal plate down on one side of the roof at a slow but constant speed. The force that is required to crush the roof is then measured.
The head restraint test went well also. This test is conducted to reduce the possibility of a neck injury. It is done by measuring restraints with torso angle.
The headlight test did not yield favorable results. On the straightaway during the test, visibility was deemed inadequate on both sides of the road. On curves, visibility was consistently inadequate for each of the four tests.
Finally, the child seat anchors were found to be adequate. This test was done by evaluating the accessibility of lower anchors for the car seat as well as the force capability of the back seat seatbelts.
How does the safety of the Jeep Patriot compare to other vehicles with the same size and class?
As mentioned, the Jeep Patriot is a small SUV. This puts its curb weight, which is the weight without occupants or baggage, anywhere from 3,001-3,750 pounds.
The next table will show small SUV driver deaths in 2018 in relation to all other vehicle types. Of note is the fact that all of the vehicles studied were anywhere within one to three years old.
2018 Driver Deaths per Million by Vehicle Type
Vehicle Type | Driver Deaths per Million |
---|---|
Cars mini | 84 |
Cars small | 54 |
Cars midsize | 41 |

SUVs midsize | 21 |
SUVs large | 17 |
SUVs very large | 13 |
The Patriot has fewer deaths than six of the 12 total sizes measured. In comparison to the other three SUV sizes though, it has the most driver deaths within the year 2018.
So now that we’ve covered driver deaths, let’s cover occupant deaths. The following table shows vehicle occupant deaths in frontal, side, rear, and other accidents. Other accidents usually mean an accident involving a rollover.
Car Crash Deaths by Point of Impact
Vehicle type | Frontal impact point | Side Impact | Rear impact | Other (mostly rollover) | All |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
SUV occupants | 2,784 (21.5%) | 930 (17.4%) | 286 (21.8%) | 1,035 (31.3%) | 5,035 (22%) |
Car occupants | 7,433 (57.4%) | 3,568 (66.6%) | 834 (63.7%) | 1,303 (39.5%) | 13,138 (57.4%) |

In each of the four categories, SUVs accounted for fewer occupant deaths than cars, but more than pickups.
This final table shows SUV driver and occupant deaths per million registered passenger vehicles that are anywhere from one to three years old. This table covers the years 2009 to 2018.
2009-2018 SUV Drive and Occupant Car Crash Deaths
Year | SUV driver deaths | SUV occupant deaths |
---|---|---|
2009 | 25 | 36 |
2010 | 20 | 29 |
2011 | 17 | 24 |
2012 | 16 | 23 |
2013 | 19 | 26 |
2014 | 18 | 24 |
2015 | 20 | 29 |
2016 | 21 | 32 |
2017 | 22 | 33 |
2018 | 23 | 32 |
While no real trends specific to SUVs can be seen, IIHS notes that the rates of deaths per 1 million registered vehicles tend to be higher for smaller vehicles. In each of these 10 years, SUVs had fewer deaths per 1 million registered vehicles than cars and pickups.

What are the safety features of the Jeep Patriot?
The 2017 Jeep Patriot is loaded with safety features to ensure the safety of you and your loved ones.
Having air bags can reduce car insurance rates. The following video shows the effectiveness of the (2012) Jeep Patriot’s air bag system.
- Anti-lock brakes – These brakes automatically sense when one or more tires have ceased rotating under extreme braking. The system modulates brake pressure to allow the stagnant tire to rotate.
- Stability control – This system senses when your vehicle’s handling limits have been exceeded. It reduces engine power and applies the brakes to keep the driver in control of the vehicle.
- Front-impact air bags – These protect the driver and front passenger’s head during a frontal crash.
- Side-impact air bags – These are also for the driver and front passenger and are designed to protect one’s torso during a side-impact collision.
- Overhead air bags – These are used to protect occupants’ heads during a side collision or rollover accident.
- Pretensioners – These automatically tighten seatbelts during a collision to position the occupant’s body in a way that would be the least harmful.
- Anti-whiplash – These head restraints automatically detect and react to a rear collision and cradle the occupant’s head to reduce the risk of neck or spinal injuries.
Up next, we’ll go in-depth on safety ratings for the Jeep Patriot.

In larger vehicles such as these SUVs, there is a longer distance than sedans from the front of the vehicle to the occupants, which provides extra protection.
In a collision, vehicle weight is a substantial factor in regard to occupant safety. The larger of the two vehicles will push the smaller one during the crash, and less force is exerted on the occupants of the larger vehicle.
The following table shows the weights for the different SUV sizes.
SUV Size Classifications
SUV size | Curb Weight |
---|---|
Small | 3,001-3,750 lbs |
Midsize | 3,751-4,750 lbs |
Large | 4,751-5,750 lbs |
Very large | >5,750 lbs or >115 sq ft |
Next to the curb weight for very large SUVs, there is a term called “shadow”. For vehicles, the shadow is the overall length multiplied by the width in square feet. Essentially, the larger the shadow, the less force will be exerted on its occupants.

The next three quotes are generalized estimates for low, medium, and high coverage for a person with a clean driving record.
- Low coverage average monthly premium – $94.27
- Medium coverage average monthly premium – $97.24
- High coverage average monthly premium – $98.72
The low coverage was for $20,000 in property damage liability, the medium was for $100,000, and the high was for $500,000. The jump between medium and high coverage is a substantial increase, yet the premium hike is negligible.
What is the MSRP of the Jeep Patriot?
The fair market range of a vehicle is the range of prices that Kelley Blue Book considers fair upon taking make, model, and style into account. This is different from an MSRP, or the manufacturer’s suggested retail price, which is reserved for new vehicles, usually in a new model year. Because the Jeep Patriot has been discontinued, there are no further MSRPs.
The table below shows the Fair Market Value of the Jeep Patriot by model year.
2013-2017 Jeep Patriot Fair Market Value
Model Year | Fair Market Range |
---|---|
2017 | $12,926 - $15,709 |

2014 | $8,884 - $10,957 |
2013 | $7,563 - $9,374 |
The further back the year, the more the price decreases. One can expect older models to have more wear, tear, and miles on the odometer.
